About the program (undergraduate)

The Biochemistry program gives students an opportunity to learn about the traditional areas of science, such as biology, chemistry, cell and molecular biology, as well as newer areas such as proteomics, bioinformatics and systems biology.  Our students also have the opportunity to complement their classroom learning with hands-on training in modern techniques through several of our laboratory courses.

Both the academic and technical training our students receive during their undergraduate studies provide the proper foundation to pursue graduate studies in biochemistry, careers in academia, research positions in the medical or basic sciences as well as further studies in medicine, dentistry or other health specialties.

Programs available

Students have the option of registering for the following programs in Biochemistry:

Specialization in Biochemistry

  • This program is intended for students who wish to pursue a career in experimental biology.  Only students registered in the specialization program have the option to complete the fourth year research project under the supervision of an affiliate of the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences or or the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology, which have over 100 members both on campus and throughout the Ottawa region.

Minor in Biochemistry

Students also have the opportunity to combine their studies in biochemistry with training in chemical engineering in a specialized five-year program in which they will obtain a BSc in Biochemistry and a BASc in Chemical Engineering.

B.Sc. Honours with Specialization in Biochemistry (Biotechnology) / BASc. in Chemical Engineering (Biotechnology)

Co-op Option

Students registered in the Specialization program, the Major or the BSc in Biochemistry/BASc in Chemical Engineering may choose to enrol in the cooperative education program.  The option allows students to complete four 4-month long paid work terms in the private sector, federal ministries and academic labs.

Admission requirements

  • Full-time registration in the BSc in Biochemistry/BASc in Chemical Engineering, BSc Specialization in Biochemistry or BSc Major in Biochemistry programs
  • Minimum CGPA of 6.0
  • Have completed all course requirements up to the semester of co-op application
