How to Apply

How to apply - Header image

To see if you meet our entrance requirements, please consult the "Entrance Requirements" page.

If you meet the entrance requirements, you can apply for admission through the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral studies.

Some helpful notes about the application process:

  • Unless you already have an M.Sc. degree, you should apply to the M.Sc. program even if you are interested in obtaining a Ph.D. by ‘skipping’ the M.Sc.  We allow transfers to the Ph.D. program after the first year.
  • If you have obtained or are obtaining your undergraduate degree at uOttawa, you do not need to send in your transcripts with your application package since we have access to your grades.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Our University admits students at the beginning of each semester only – that is at the beginning of September, January or May.  The application deadlines are as follows:

Canadian Applicants

Intended starting semester Application deadline
September August 15
January December 1
May April 15

International Applicants

Unless you have your own funding or scholarships, the deadline for international students is January 1st to start in September of the following academic year.  This is because international students without their own funding must apply for a “international fee scholarship” from the University’s Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and there is only one competition a year.  If you have your own funding or scholarships, then the deadline is the same as for Canadian applicants.
