New COVID-19 Fund From the SSA

SSA helps science students cover unexpected expenses with new COVID-19 Fund.

With students facing new and unforeseen expenses during the pandemic, the University of Ottawa Science Students’ Association (SSA) has helped them meet important needs with a new COVID-19 Fund. On top of the usual activities the SSA engages in, such as academic representation and social events, the Science student government group has worked beyond expectations to ensure students benefit from their continued support.

This fund is in addition to the University’s Covid-19 Emergency Bursary and offered students another opportunity to apply for much needed assistance. Since mid-April, 71 deserving recipients received amounts of $200 to $2,000 from the fund that totaled $60,800. These students were encountering needs such as emergency flights home or loss of work leading to difficulties meeting living expenses.

Students receiving the funds have expressed their immense gratitude for the support during this difficult time. One student said in an email to the SSA, “I wanted to write and thank you tremendously for the relief funds. It has taken a huge load off my back and I can’t say thank you enough.”
