Science Preparatory Workshop for the Newly Admitted

The transition to university marks a memorable point in one's educational career. For many, this is both an exciting and challenging time. Students are introduced to a wide array of new opportunities that help shape one’s time in university. However, with each experience comes a large feat of uncertainty that hinders students from optimally benefiting from each of their experiences.

Fortunately, the Science Preparatory Workshop will be offered again this year to support incoming undergraduate students aiming to build the confidence and knowledge needed to successfully transition into their university science studies!

Upon discussing with Sador, a second year mentor organizing the science preparatory workshop, we were able to obtain a closer look! She explained that the workshop would be a three-day series, from September 1st to 3rd for incoming first year science students, but also open to second-year students who did not attend last year. The event will include virtual presentations and activities from esteemed professors, lab coordinators, external services, and student mentors in the Faculty of Science.

As a student mentor herself, she was excited to share the numerous mentor presentations and Q&A sessions at the event. She expressed, “The advice that attendees can acquire from the mentoring presentations is truly special. Each student mentor is an upper-year student who recently went through what incoming students are bound to experience. The advice that they will gain from attending the workshop is not something they can obtain from a simple Google search, rather, it is based on lived experience, which in some cases is most valuable”.

To top it all off, the event will provide students with the opportunity to engage in social activities where they will be able to meet their future classmates, lab partners, and longtime friends! Although it cannot be confirmed until we approach the event dates, the event is expected to have a mix of both in-person and virtual social activities as a way of introducing students to the city of Ottawa and all that it has to offer in an engaging manner!

Last year was the very first virtual Science Preparatory Workshop, and it received an overwhelmingly positive response from the students who attended.

  • Peter Noel, a second year Biomedical Science student and Undergraduate Research Scholarship recipient shared, “The Science Preparatory Workshop was the ideal way to break the ice and ease the anxiety I felt leading up to the start of my first university courses. The workshop got me excited to join a faculty that genuinely wants me to succeed.”
  • Ahmed Darwish, a second year Biochemistry student expressed “I recommend incoming first-year students to participate in the workshop as it will teach them how to develop study habits at a university level!”

As spots are quickly filling up, interested incoming students in the Faculty of Science can register for the Science Preparatory Workshop using this form by Monday, August 9. For more information, students can visit the Science Preparatory Workshop page on the website. If students have any questions related to the workshop, they are welcome to email
