Science Students’ Association
The Science Students’ Association (SSA) is the Recognized Student Government for all 4,000+ undergraduate Science students at the University of Ottawa. From academic representation to social events, we strive to enrich the university experience of our students. Our Association Council is comprised of 13 Executive Members, 4 Managers, and 21 Departmental Representatives, with three additional Executive members during the summer months.
The best thing about the SSA is that we are completely student-run!
Representing Science students
Eleven of our elected members sit on the Faculty Council, along with our Dean, Dr. Louis Barriault, and the Department Chairs, where they advise on important decisions concerning programs and courses. Our student representatives comprise over one third of the Faculty Council, the highest ratio in Canadian universities. Our members also sit on the Academic Fraud Committee and the Curriculum Committee with the Faculty.
We also have a student Senator who sits on the University Senate, the University’s highest authority on academic matters and the establishment of educational and research policies.
Events, clubs, and services
The SSA facilitates opportunities for students to network and create friendships by hosting events such as:
- Shinerama: a philanthropic campaign raising funds to fight cystic fibrosis;
- Science 101 Week: an orientation week for first year students at the beginning of September;
- Science Formal: a formal ball held at the end of every year in April.
The SSA also funds six official clubs in which students can get involved: Sci-X, the Catalyst, the Environmental Science Student Association, the Physics Society, the Women in Math, and Pulsar Collective.
Services for students
The SSA strives to facilitate your time at the university by offering several services to students:
- Free rentals: lab coats, safety glasses, molecular model kits, calculators
- Science merchandise: bomber jackets, hoodies, shirts, hats and socks to help you show off your Science pride;
- Locker rentals: lockers in Marion for student use during the school year.
- Bookable study rooms in STEM
Each year, the SSA awards over $8,000 through 14 scholarships to full-time undergraduate Science students. The SSA also allocates $14,500 each year in grants to students who participate in conferences, competitions and other scientific endeavours. Our contribution is matched by the Faculty, doubling the amount of funds received by successful applicants.
